Cimafunk is redefining Cuban music on the global stage, emerging as a new ambassador of AfroCuban sounds with a name that honors the Cimarrons—Africans in Cuba who resisted slavery. A former medical student turned funk artist, Cimafunk has become a cultural phenomenon, uniting and celebrating blackness across borders and languages. His debut album Terapia (2018) and its groundbreaking single “Me Voy” catapulted him to international fame, with standout performances at SXSW 2019 and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert helping to solidify his place as a leader in the new wave of Cuban music. Cimafunk’s unique blend of funk, soul, and AfroCuban rhythms has earned him multiple Grammy nominations, taking the spotlight beyond traditional Cuban genres like salsa and reggaeton.

From Havana’s alternative music scene to global stages, Cimafunk’s rise has been nothing short of meteoric. With his 9-piece band, La Tribu, he has electrified audiences at iconic festivals like New Orleans Jazz Fest and Lollapalooza Chile, even becoming the first Cuban-born artist to perform at Coachella. His second album, El Alimento, received critical acclaim and was featured on Best Albums of the Year lists from Rolling Stone and NPR. His collaborations with music legends such as George Clinton, Chucho Valdés, and Jon Batiste, alongside his captivating live shows, have made him one of the most in-demand artists in the world. In 2024, Cimafunk continues his exploration of AfroCuban and funk fusion with his latest release, Pa' Tu Cuerpa, set to be his most polished work yet.
