Grammy-nominated R&B soul singer and songwriter BJ the Chicago Kid, born Bryan Sledge, has become a defining voice in modern soul music, hailing from the vibrant musical landscape of Chicago, Illinois. After captivating listeners with his gospel-infused debut album Pineapple Now-Laters in 2012, BJ quickly gained traction with standout tracks like "Honey" and "Good Luv'n," featuring frequent collaborators Freddie Gibbs and Problem. His breakout moment came in 2014 with a feature on SchoolBoy Q's Grammy-winning single "Studio" and the release of his fourth mixtape, The M.A.F.E. Project. In 2016, BJ's major-label debut In My Mind earned him three Grammy nominations, solidifying his place as one of the most soulful and compelling voices in the industry. His collaborations span a who's who of contemporary music, including Kanye West, Chance The Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, and Solange.
BJ's latest single, "Forgot Your Name," featuring Cory Henry, marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter with his forthcoming project, Gravy. Produced by Yeti Beats, known for his work with Doja Cat, the album is a fusion of live instrumentation and soulful grooves, recorded at the legendary Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. Drawing inspiration from the mellow '70s sound of Al Green, the project promises to be a rich exploration of soul, featuring contributions from Audra Day, Phillip Bailey of Earth, Wind & Fire, and more. Set to drop this summer, Gravy represents a creative experiment between BJ and Yeti, born out of mutual respect and a desire to push musical boundaries. As BJ continues to evolve, "Forgot Your Name" is poised to accelerate his trajectory as one of R&B's most resonant voices.
